Death of aspiring councillors forces MEC to postpone local government polls in Ntcheu north

Malawi Electoral Commission has postponed Local Government Elections in Kandeu Ward in Ntcheu North East and Lisanjala Ward in Machinga Likwenu following the death of UDF and MCP aspiring councilors respectively.

MEC’s Chief Elections Officer Willie Kalonga says in a statement that the move is in pursuance of Section 39 of the Local Government Elections Act of 1996.

“The Commission will conduct by-elections in the two wards after the May 20, 2014 elections”, says Kalonga.

He is urging candidates who were duly nominated for the cancelled polls to notify the Commission in writing of their intention to contest again once the Commission issues a notice to hold by-elections.
