Dedza teachers go on strike over salary delay

Teachers in Malawi’s central district of Dedza have threatened to start boycotting work as the new school calendar startstomorrow Monday in protest against the delay in getting their salary for August.

Confirming the development, the district education manager Billy Banda told a local radio Zodiak Broadcasting Station that the education ministry has not communicated to the teachers on the reasons for the delays.

One of the teachers said the delays have greatly affected their well being as most of them are going on empty stomachs and keep on hiding from land lords.

Kodi tinalakwa chiyani? [What wrong did we do?] Each and every times we are the last civil servants to get our salaries. This is very unfair. I will only return to work once get my money,” said one primary teacher.

The concerned teachers said their are failing to buy food for their families and that has failed to send their child to secondary school because of lack of school fees and pocket money for her.
