Demand for DPP’s SG to apologise for reckless remarks on North Malawi: Synod wants Jeffrey to explain in court

People  of the northern region of Malawi have asked the Secretary General for the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Gridezer Jeffrey wa Jeffrey to apologize over  reckless remarks she made that the north like the center will never rule the country.

Jefferey wa Jeffrey: DPP secretary general in tribal slurs

On Saturday during a political rally held at Karonga freedom park, the DPP SG said northern region will not produce the country’s President and that they will remain hand clappers for a leader from the South.

However, people from the north have described this as an insult and are demanding the Jeffrey to be on her knees to say ‘sorry.’

Speaking in an interview, fearless youth activist Steven Simsokwe said they cannot allow to be victimized with such kind of tribal statements.

“The former  Agriculture Minister Dr George Chaponda also said the same remarks. It means the DPP regard us useless and a dumping area, thus why they want dump the refugees here,” Simsokwe said.

According to Simsokwe, he has already started mobilizing the youths across the region to hold protest against the DPP SG for her remarks.

He said they will go to the street if Jeffrey decided to remain quite on the matter.

Meanwhile, the Synod of Livingstonia through Church and Society has disclosed its plan of taking Jeffrey to court especially if she failed to apologize.

Speaking to the media, Moses Mkandawire said the DPP SG will explain what she meant in the court of law.

Some quarters in the social media are demanding President Peter Mutharika who is the leader of the party to fire the SG.

Jeffrey made the remarks when she also attacked Member of Parliament for Karonga Central Frank Mwenifumbo and the leadership of Alliance for Democracy (Aford) declaring that they will never rule the country till eternity.

“I have touched base with many districts in the Northern Region and observed that people from the region are not interested in a leader presently but development. Why should somebody waste his time to join Aford and promise to win support for the entire North?

“I don’t see any politician in Aford that can convince Northerners to have a candidate and win in elections. There is no longer politics in the region but development under DPP administration,” Jeffrey said.

Mwenifumbo reacted by accusing the DPP of promoting politics of regionalism, a development he said negatively affects development in the country.

“Her remarks are very unfortunate. I am happy her remarks have revealed what DPP is all about. This is the third time a senior member of DPP has uttered nepotistic, tribalistic, regionalistic remarks referring the people from the North as failures. Who is she to condemn us?” Mwenifumbo queried.

Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) Secretary Martin Chiphwanya has since condemned DPP secretary general’s “careless sentiments”.

“Malawi belongs to all of us and no particular grouping should be looked down upon,” Chiphwanya said.

In parliament, Leader of Opposition Lazarus Chakwera also demanded Jeffrey’s apology for her  remarks which he said promote tribalism, nepotism and regionalism.

Chakwera said declaring that the north will never  produce a State President is “unfortunate words”.

Speaker of Parliament also cautioned against politics of regionalism.

And the revered chief Kyungu is very happy with these remarks from a dunderhead DPP SG, Gridezer…what a name & shame!!! The remarks were made right under the nose of Chief Kyungu in his own district and he decides to remain silent. Shame!

  11. Kabiniko says:

  12. Benson Ngolo Bengo says:

    Chilungamo ndimwano I can see

  13. Bright says:

Those poeple who are speaking the north are not God. The acts of God are not the acts of people. In fact the leaders conning from there are failing to govern. It’s a shame anyway to produce a leader who is a failure. We are all Malawians. The results of regionalism is that we produce bad leaders. Even in the Southern Region its only one tribe that wants to monopolise leadership. Other tribes from the South are like us in the north suffering segregation

  14. Ebuka says:

Nde mwati who? amayankhula kuti zimenezi?

  15. mabuza says:

jeffrey sanapiteko ku school that is the problem

  16. DONALD MKWEWU says:

Let the DPP send their SG to school, the position of an SG can not be efficiently handled by someone with no formal education. she is even failing to articulate issues in English.

  17. Nachika says:

Munthuyutu wayankhula zenizeni. It doesnt matter kuti kusukulu sanapite ndipo ndi mbuli yeniyeni. Koma pot zandale zilibe school, its oky.

  18. Namanyaru says:

What the SG said might be rude but it is true!

Nawonso a Livingstonia Synod angosonyeza kupanda nzeru kwawo they will take her to court for what? No wonder they thought popularity ya Chimwemwe Mhango meant their synod is popular in the whole region!

Uyonso Steven Simsokwe smokes very strong weed! Za ma refugee ndi zoti atumbuka sadzalamulira zikugwirizana pati?

  19. Zau says:

True. The north will never produce a president and if by accident that happens, Malawi will end because these people are selfish. They think they are intelligent.

    1. Jelbin mk says:

They don’t think they are intelligent, they are intelligent simply because you have not proven otherwise. You have not proven how selfish they are, zomangomvela kwa makola anu akamayankhula but you have not personally found facts that supports your arguements. Anyway you say if by accident a northerner become a president the country will be in trouble? Is it in good shape now under your fellow tribe man? Northerner are the only true democrats in Malawi. They don’t vote in regional or tribal lines otherwise they could not have overwhelmingly vote for Bingu in 2009. People allege that northerners have the wakwathu syndrom and yet their own deeds proves otherwise. If they had that wakwithu syndrom they could have voted for Loveness Gondwe or anyone else from the north but they did contrary to that which proves many disgruntled non northerners believe.

      1. Chembeya says:

What makes northers intelligent? this is fallacy as it is generalized. Voting on politicians from other region does not prove their democratic tendencies, It needs to be proven. Why do many civil societies speak highly on government dealings and never condemn opposition when all the time they see negativity on Malawi development. You never demonstrated when cash gate was uncovered in 2012-this affected all of us. But you made noise on MK 12, 500 bag of maize for Admarc but you rightly knew maize could not be sold at at lower price than purchased as the region was facing scarcity of the commodity. NORTHERS YOU ARE REALLY SELFISH AND WHEN SOUTHERNERS ARE SILENT YOU THINK THEY ARE STUPID AND NOT INTELLIGENT. THIS TIME TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH!!!!!!

  20. Tozer Tsono says:

now we know what unity means from mutharika’s and DPP’s point of view. The insinuation that the North is a separate entity and that Malawians, especially in South and Central are so biased, and can not choose a president based on content of character is alarming. Peter Mutharika must promote you for representing him and his views so clearly! Mwanyambita matako aguru mayi, pepani, muzingo bwebweta choncho. A Northerner will not only win but will move the country forward.

  21. Kevin Mirallas says:

Interesting comments. I didn’t read the story, by the way.

  22. karonga says:

It is good that this woman can openly unveil the deep rooted apartheid Malawi has, more especially under the leadership of the toothless PM. In fact PM was the proposer of federalism and you cannot question his actions when all senior positions in government are taken up by relations. Apartheid at its best but eventually this act will backfire in a dangerous way.

  23. Mbwindi says:

Akunyozanitu apa aku Nyika Republic koma muli nganganga pa mbuyo pa DPP.It shows DPP can survive without northeners

  24. Mwejo says:

Tingoyambanso ndale zija zomagendana basi. Munthu wa nzeru bwinobwino sangalankhule zimenezi pamsonkhano mbuzi zina zomwe zinalipo nkumawombera mmanja. Shame on you Jeffrey. Usadzabwerenso kuno kumpoto, chifukwa uzanyamulidwa uli mtembo Chitsiru, chibekete, chihule chachabechabe iwe.

  25. Munyunkali says:

No grouping of people can afford to have a character such as Jeff wa Jeff as its Secretary General. The GSs position is about party building- – GS cannot afford to insult a section of her membership. Electoral reforms should pass through quickly so that we now argue on intelligence, not on tribal/regional lines if Malawi is to develop socially, economically and intellectually.

  26. DDP Member says:

Kunena chilungamo, Jeffrey ananena chilungamo & chilungamo chimawawa

  27. cymru says:

I think the issue is blown out of proportion. Leave this to the politicians, they know each other. Some of us who do not believe in tribalism are not affected by this development. It seems the utterances by the SG of the DPP are politicized to the extent of covering the whole region yet she mentioned AFORD. In fact during campaign rallies many things are said but blowing this is not good at all. If we are not happy, why not wait and express that at the appropriate time. Politicians should not divide us in pursuit of their ambitions. Unfortunately, some over zealous people rush to connect such utterances to issues of national interest like Mr. Simfukwe. Please, slow down. If the utterances were made by government of the day I could be worried but coming from a party SG is not an issue. It is possible the SG had asked the member mentioned to join DPP and was frustrated to note that he has joined another party. The goodness is that every five years we are given a chance to elect leaders of our preference. Why not wait for that time to change other than wasting time for somebody to apologize? During the coming campaign or the already unofficially launched campaign for the 2019, people will be uttering all sorts of statements, are we going to take them to court or ask them to apologize? Leave them. May be its a blessing in disguise to know them better from what they say. Emotions will not change anything but rational reasoning.

  30. Mlambia wa Kuwale says:

The statement by DPP SG is useless and the source is an educated savage. Malawi is a united nation, such sentiments may devide the nation if it continues. She must apologise or else we northerners will react in a very unusual way

  31. banda says:

Chance for MCP and PP to capitalize DPP weakness in the north.

  32. wakuphili says:

Truth pains. However a candidate from the north standing for a national party can make it.

  33. Mr phalombe says:

Her crime should be insensitivity otherwise zimene akunenazo ndizoona. Election is about numbers & north doesn’t have that. Sorry to say this but: A northern president will be a disaster-northerners will want a revenge as they feek disgrantled now. Komanso trend ya northern politicians proves kuti they are unstable leaders: All chihanas; mwenefumbos; kachales; kamlepos even the livingstonia synod.

  34. Maria says:

  37. Kingsley Jika says:

The whole reason we chose multiparty was that merit should dictate. The language made was unfortunate. But we do not need to read too much in this. Let us remember how that we have always fought as a united front to better right from the days of Independence. This should not be a matter to break that great bond. Not long ago, Jappie Mhango said something to the same effect; he was not taken to court. It has become an issue this time because the ‘utterer’ is a party top brass. The DPP should learn a lesson here that reckless words can be as dangerous as acts especially where there are more more issues underlying our frustrations as a nation. So, let us use this as opportunity to redefine our politics, to agree more on the best form of inclusive democracy we should follow. I implore all parties to always caution overzealousness. As for the Lady, you can offer that apology & smile with them again. This our only inheritance, Malawi, we must never allow any differences to overtake us. Even in comments & criticisms, let us force ourselves to go it slow. I love my country. GOD bless you all.

  38. Mambewe man says:

By the way do you remember that the same sentiments were echoed by one Ziliro Chibambo from the “south”. Did we get any reaction from Livingstonia ” Political Party”. Did the speaker then made any comment. Kodi a Lazaro Chakwera a yiwala zoti kongolesi ndiyo ya thankho kweni kweni pothamangitsa aphunzitsi kuti aliyense akaphunzitse kwao mkwao. Amalawi simuchedwadi kuiwala. Dont hate Jeoff for calling a spade a spade. Politics is a game of numbers indeed. If the North can not come up with a strong party then I conquer with Jeoff.

  39. Mbanu says:

No one can be happy with such behaviour,Malawi is for all of us,no Tonga no Yawo Tumbuka no Sena but we are all Malawians.

  40. Ana Achepa says:

Frankly speaking I don’t see what the northerners wants from DPP SG, she made the point straight forward and in a clear manner so that anybody should understand so there is no need to drug her to court to explain the same, secondly she made these sentiments in northern region and she had consent from the people of north to say those words because upon saying so people from the north clapped hands for her and others ululating showing that what she was saying was true, so why are you people castigating and insulting Jefferey wa Jefferey on this issue?. Aaaaaaaaa come on people think and use your heads to think, don’t just labour your body to carry the head.

  41. Amaduh Cassim says:

Ine ngati mkulu wa zamalamulo ndkut palibe nkhani apa ndipo mayiwa sakunama .

  42. Ambulaje Ambuje says:

Chilungamo chimawawa eti? As much as what she said might not be acceptable especially coming from SG but the truth is that for the North and Center to produce a President, they need to have inroads to the South, as we all know politics is a game of numbers therefore you can not have a President with minority votes. Unfortunately the mentioned Regions keeps on sidelining the South when it comes to party positions. Remember in the south Chiradzulu alone has a population equal to the whole Northern Region so if voting will continue to be done one Regional basis, this means the North and the Center won’t indeed have a State President!

  43. The Black Hacker says:

    Sakunama..anthu akunorth ndani sakuziwani

  44. Zinenani Zoona says:

Jefu wa Jefre is a thief, con woman, loose, toungue woman. Remember Ministry of Education where she was paid for a school she never built? Yet the DPP still appointed her as SG?

  45. captain Morgan says:

These DPP guys are not serious. How can they choose that woman to be the secretary general? Fire her right away. Mbuli yachabechabe kumangoyankhula ngati hule zoti ali pa msonkhano sazidziwa. Mr President, are u happy with such statements?

  46. The issue is not taking this lady to court, the issue here is for the north to produce a president come 2019 to prove her wrong otherwise it might be possible that what she is saying is true. Please northerners let us hold hands and prove the DPP SG wrong that malawi can be ruled with a person from the north period!! Otherwise we will be fighting a cold war.

  47. ade says:

IF MUTHARIKA HAS [email protected] HE WILL FIRE THIS WOMAN.

  48. chihana says:

Koma to be honest, do you expect the north to produce a president? The north fails to unite in purpose, it fails to support one political grouping eg afford, even its church (the livingstonia political party) gets divided forever, then how do you expect such selfish people to produce a president?

And is it a lie that the north lacks numbers? Is the north not aware that politics is a game of numbers?

To me, Jeffrey was just right. Only that the truth pains.

    DPP, BOOOOMA mpakana mtumbuka aphwise.

    1. Charlie Hebdo says:

When the North unite and support one political party, what do people from other regions especially the South say? “Northerners are tribalists, regionalists et cetera, et cetera”. The truth that most of our brothers from the South and Centre refuse to acknowledge is that we are all tribalists or regionalists but the vice is most prevalent in the Southern Region. Apart from the first multiparty elections where all regions voted along regional or tribal lines, the North has voted based on substance they perceive in a party. Would you call that being regionalistic? Dr Peter Chiona was elected Member of Parliament for Chitipa East under MCP. DPP has had its fare share of MPs in the district and other districts in the Northern Region. Honestly, do you think a party with Northern Region origins or whose leadership is from the North could dream of getting a seat in Mulanje, Nsanje or any other district in the Southern Region? At least Aford had a seat in Kasungu North and Nkhotakota North during the first multiparty election. The truth is, the North is the least regionalistic region in the country no matter how much you disagree with this assessment. The truth will always be the truth, no matter how hard you try to conceal it.

    2. Jelbin mk says:

Does being united mean belonging to one party in a multiparty democracy? Your argument and thinking is fraud my brotherman.

  49. Achimidzimidzi says:

No more DPP rallies in the north region because you bring confusion and hatred.

  50. gwenyethe says:

These stupid utterances by DPP gurus will continue. This is what we call self-destruction. They will face isolation without knowing it. They will be cheated by the good-for-nothing and lazy cadets who are ferried from one rally to another to make up numbers. I will not be surprised when the same utterances will be poured towards other tribes in other regions because this is the trademark of DPP. This party is nuisance to the country. It is reckless, careless and childish. We made a big mistake to vote it back to power.

  51. Zabweka says:

Tell us maybe Malawi is only for the South?

  52. Dr tambala says:

stupid nyasatimes since when did simfukwe and moses become “the people of the northern region”? if what the DPP SG was unpalatable to her audience why did they not boo her or stone her? wa Jeffrey is right, aford will never rule Malawi that is a fact. A party with a regional agenda will never win a national election.

  53. lesley says:

Akweni sayankhula mbwerera ngati za SG uyu. Kupupuluma.

    1. Major 10 says:

Kamuzu told you Malawians way back in 1992 that multi party means war and tribalism.
