DPP leaders want their North Malawi governor out: Accused of soliciting bribes
The ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) district governors in the Northern Region have written President Peter Mutharika asking him to fire the party’s Regional Governor, Kenneth Sanga, from his position, it has been reported.
According to reports in the press, Robert Mkandawire who is governor for Mzimba Hora, Stanly Mtonga who governs Mzimba District, Kachipapa Mwenda from Rumphi District and Likoma governor, Peter Ndalama have appended their signatures to a letter dated December 7, 2016 carries accusations against Sanga on his leadership style.
He is also accused of collecting money from Malawians of Asian origin and other businessmen in the name of Mutharika, ministers and ruling party using some people whose names have been concealed.
Sanga said he aware of t the letter and told Daily Times newspaper on Friday:“These things started long time back and there are some influential people behind these district governors who want to spoil the party. Therefore, I reserve my comment.”
In the letter, the governors said their grievances were once brought to the attention of regional Vice President Goodall Gondwe.
“We are very angry and we have been complaining to the vice president for the Northern Region, Goodall Gondwe, for the bad conduct of the regional governor togrther with the director of Youth (Kelvin Chirambo) and Director of Women (a Mrs Chikukula). Instead of fighting with opposition parties, they are busy fighting DPP Members of Parliament.
“We want to inform you, Your Excellency, that all the youths who were suspended in the past are still outside the party despite your request tnat they should come back,” reads part part of the letter which also claims DPP parliamentarians in the region are equally perplexed with the issue.
Sanga and Chirambo are also accused of sending police officers to chase and stop the same youths from attending the presidents rally in Chitipa, a development the governors feel dented the image of the party.
“We are asking you (Mutharika) that you should not send us to Honourable Godall Gondwe because Sanga was a personal assistant to Gondwe and he is failing to discipline him,” the letter reads
DPP secretary general Francis Mphepo said the letter is in his in-tray.
