DPP used to threaten chiefs, TA Mkumbira tells rally addressed by Zikhale
Traditional Authority (TA) Mkumbira of Nkhata Bay District has disclosed that Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) used to threaten chiefs seen attending any other political grouping than DPP when it was in power.
TA Mkumbira made the disclosure Saturday at Nkhata Bay community ground during a People’s Party (PP) political rally organized by PP National Deputy Campaign Director Dr. Ken Zikhale Ng’oma.
He was reacting to what State President Dr Joyce Banda said recently when she visited Nkhata Bay that chiefs there used to shun her political gatherings.
“We, chiefs, were eager to attend other political party functions but DPP officials used to threaten us that if seen attending other political party rallies other than DPP, we would be dethroned,” TA Mkumbira said.
He, then, assured PP officials that all chiefs in the district support the Government of the day.
“As chiefs we support the government that is ruling; as such, we are supporting the PP government,” he said.
Zikhale Ng’oma said chiefs need to be treated with dignity as they are the custodian of culture.
He said that is why President Banda told chiefs that they should not be involved in politics but, rather, continue with their work as chiefs.
“As PP we are not going to use any chief in political activities. Our Head of State Dr. Joyce Banda said that chiefs should not be used for political gains but they should follow their line of work,” he said.
On the Economic Recovery Plan (ERP) that government is implementing, Ng’oma said people in the country need to know the good results which the ERP has already started generating good results.
“People in the village need to know how the Economic Recovery Plan is progressing. That is why we have come here in Nkhata Bay to explain the good results of the recovery plan,” he said.
Among other things, he cited availability of forex in the country’s banks and enough fuel supply among others.
