DPP's 'metrosexual' lawmaker Ngwira defects to PP

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) regional governor for the North Reverend Christopher Mzomela Ngwira, who is also Member of Parliament for Mzimba Hora has defected to Malawi’s ruling People’s Party (PP), the party that accused him of being metrosexual – a man who pays a lot of attention to his appearance.

Ngwira confirmed to Nyasa Times that he has joined PP in order to foster development of his constituency and that the region he comes from is now predominantly PP.

He said his continued stay in the opposition was going to delay development in the area.

Ngwira has since formally told DPP about his resignation through a letter submitted to the party’s acting secretary general Dr Allan Chiyembekeza.

Ngwira: Metro-sexual?

In the letter, he wrote: “It is with deep regret that I write to you to inform you of my decision to leave the party with effect from 31st December 2012. The reason for the decision is personal.

“This was a very difficult and painful decision for me to make for a number reasons.”

DPP spokesman Nicholous Dausi said people “should not read too much into the resignation of Ngwira.” He did not elaborate.

Metrosexual

Ngwira dominated headlines during the last year’s twin Mzimba by-elections when he accused the PP government of promoting same-sex liaisons.

He was attacked by PP treasurer general Harry  Mkandawire for allegedly  being  metro-sexual.

“He uses Ambi Shubaba despite being a man,” said Mkandawire during the campaign meetings.

Ambi Shubaba is a skin-whitening cream which breaches the face. It is mostly used by women.

The desires for lighter skin have been raised with the belief that a fairer complexion equates to beauty.

Mkandawire went further to claim that the DPP was harbouring gays and bisexuals  in its top ranks, saying Ngwira’s sexuality raises questions and wondered if he is not flirting with DPP leader – Professor Peter Mutharika.

Mutharika lost his wife of 30 years and he has three grown children in the United States where he lived for decades before returning home to join politics. He is in “an open relationship” with Balaka North female MP Getrude Maseko but continue to attract rumours on his sexual orientation.
