Drama at court as Malawi Afro-pop star Dan Lu fights divorced wife

Afro-pop star Dan Lufani, widely known in music circles as Dan Lu, created a scene on Tuesday afternoon at Blantyre Magistrates Court when he wanted to beat his divorced wife, Thalisa Chimbalanga after disagreements erupted over his failure to honor court order.

The divorced couple, who tied a knot in a colourful wedding two years ago, appeared before Magistrate Diana Mangwana in compliance of court orders on sharing of matrimonial property where the wife was advised to retain the family’s property while the singer was ordered to pay her a business start-up capital.

The singer filed for divorce registered as Civil Case Number 79 of 2013 on grounds that the marriage was irretrievably broken-down.

However, on Tuesday  drama ensued when Lufani took the court by surprise and disclosed he would give Thalisa K100, 000, which the Magistrate mockingly quashed as ‘not enough’ to start up a substantial business.

Magistrate Mangwana said the money was only enough for a business proposal by but Lufani could not bargain any further, complaining “I am currently in financial crisis”.

Lufani said: “I have K100, 000; I can’t manage more than that. I am currently in financial crisis. Things are not working out for me. I disbanded my band because of lack of funds. And I have been working with Lucius Banda as part of his Zembani Band and he is not even paying me”.

His explanation, however, did not stand as the court demanded him to produce the claimed K100, 000 in cash which was later discovered that he didn’t have any money on him.

This only build up more drama as the Uhule ndi Mtima singer asked Thalisa to sell out the matrimonial property – a Television screen and a carpet – to raise the needed business start-up capital.

But that only angered the divorced wife who later revealed that Lufani had pocketed money meant for her parents’ tombstone unveiling as the Magistrate adjourned the case indefinitely following the couple’s disagreements.

“My brother in South Africa gave him (Lufani) money to give me as a contribution for our parents’ tombstone unveiling. He pocketed the money and spent it on one of his shows. Since he can’t manage to give me the business start-up capital, he should then refund the money he pocketed,” said Thalisa.

Outside the court Lufani could not hold his temper as he lashed out at his divorced wife, creating a scene and was about to beat her before the court Marshalls came to her rescue.

Background

Magistrate Diana Mangwana in March granted the consent divorce (in chamber) certificates to Lufani and Thalisa with a fee of K13, 0000 and was duly signed by the two as well as their marriage counselors.

According to the Consent Judgment, the divorce came about following persistent differences between the couple which resulted in the two living separately.

“A decree of dissolution of the marriage on the ground of irretrievably breakdown be and is hereby granted. All matrimonial property to remain with the respondent,” reads the ruling in part.

Reaction

In an earlier interview with Nyasa Times, Thalisa 26, confessed to still be in love with the urban musician while disclosing that the artist was cheating on her with a string of girlfriends.

“I have gone through hell; he beats me and has a string of girlfriends including a sugar Mamie who has promised to sponsor his So What DVD. He likes to save his girlfriends under other music artists’ names. A certain girl was saved as Tay-Grin, another one Cos Chiwalo, Katelele Ching’oma and many more”.

She added: “He takes his phone everywhere even to toilet room. Whenever I asked him about the girlfriends, he argues that they are his fans and that is the reason why we are surviving. He is quiet but abusive. He likes to flirts on social media with different girls.”

Thalisa further disclosed to have helped co-writing some of the Lufani’s songs including the smash-hit Uhule ndi Mtima. Thalisa was featured in video of Mphete and Kangaude.

“I used to sell his music. He claims men would buy his CDs if I sell them for him. He is so jealousy, I can’t chat with any man. There are several celebrities including international stars who have been insulted by him because I chat with them”.
