Elly K discusses the hustle in Malawi music industry

Musician Ellen Kadango popularly known as Elly K says the Malawi music industry is not as rosy as others assume, stressing that it is very hard for artists to earn a living just from music.

The artist, famous for her errotic dancing antics,  said she decided to venture into the fashion industry because she could not survive in music industry.

“Having known that in Malawi a musician cannot survive through  earnings  from music alone as it isn’t that much paying, and both my parents are into  business, I got the motivation to open my own shop.”

“Tupochele fashions shop and unisex saloon located in Biwi along Chidzanja road in Lilongwe sells clothes and cosmetics,” said Kadango.

She however admitted that it was quite a challenge to run a business and at the same time be actively involved in the music arena.

“Of course it is a bit challenging because I have to make sure all things are working and succeeding,” admitted Kadango.

She then disclosed her ambition to own a cloth line label.

“It is one of my dreams to one day own my own cloth line label because I am already a good designer as most of my stage outfits are done by myself so it would not be that much of a challenge but what is needed most is promotion and marketing in order for them to be a success,” explained Elly K.

Apart from music and business careers, Elly K is soon expected to conclude  studies in Community Development. –(Reporting by Joseph Mtingwi)
