Reaction on Lucius failed show, as Billy hits UK

image Lucius Banda: Committed to a rescheduled date

Malawians in United Kingdom reacted with mixed feelings to the news that Lucius Banda had not been not granted a visa to enter the UK to perform with his Zembani Band.

He was due to perform in Nottingham on Saturday night but the show was announced to have been cancelled Friday afternoon after the Visa hiccups.

The Malawian music guru join the list of world celebrity stars who failed to enter UK over visa hiccups.

US rap star Snoop Dogg was denied entry to UK owing to his multiple criminal convictions including selling cocaine despite his concert at Wembley arena having sold out. Mike Tyson was also denied a visa after his rape conviction.

"It is tempting to draw parallels between Snoop, Tyson and Banda. Banda has an unexpired conviction for forgery. This is not a small offence. Don't forget he was fired as an MP for this. The British high commission obviously got wind of it, after all they read the papers,” Pia Likoya posted his comments in the discussion forum, Nyasanet.

“In British immigration parlance: his visit was not conducive to the public interest,” he argued.

Border and Immigration Agency under the UK Home Office said it could not comment on individual cases.

Southern African Cultural (SAC) Events, organizers of the show confirmed Malawi music king pin failed to hold the much hyped concert due to Visa problems.

“Although Work Permits were granted, we have had procedural difficulties concerning Visas,” a spokesperson for the organizers said.

But Malawian fun seekers nostalgic about home music show have openly expressed disappointment with the “inconveniences” the cancellation of the show has impacted on them.

Raymond Chikafa former announcer on Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) told Nyasa Times that the late cancellation of the show was costly.

“I had cancelled my work shifts for the weekend to travel to Nottingham for the show. I could not stomach the last minute cancellation announcement,” said Chikafa from Essex.

Peter Makossah who has been Banda’s manager could not hide his disappointments over the development.

“There were many other things which were organised to go along with Lucius Banda’s presence,” said Makossah.

He had organised a night-long party for his son, Sina Makossah in Nottingham on Sunday night where the music icon was going to be a guest of honour.

“Lucius is a godfather of Sina and he was going to be the chief guest at the party where many would have had chance to interact with him after the show,” said  Makossah who is going ahead with his scheduled party in Nottingham.

Justin Kaunda in Nottingham also said postponement of the show had distressed him.

“I had already bought a ticket for the show and I really don’t know what will happen,” he said.

SAC Events said they will refund people who bought advanced tickets to the value of £30 each. They also said any debit/credit card purchases will be automatically refunded.

“Tickets bought by cash will receive a refund in person at the point of sale with the return of your ticket(s),” explained the organizers.

Steve Madeira from Birmingham said the fever for Lucius's show had gripped many of Malawians in diaspora and that he prepared much to interact with fellow country folks at the show.

“On logistics, I have spent already money in preparation for the show where everybody was expecting to link up with missed friends,” he said.

Clara Gomango from Liverpool said many had dipped in their purses to buy new outfit for the event.

“Money was spent in buying new clothes and fashion accessories in readiness for the concert,” she said.

Hassan Chilumpha from London said as much as he was annoyed with the late cancellation he refused to accuse the musician for the mess.

“I think Lucius does not deserve sticks from us. The organizers should have made sure his travel arrangements were sorted before publicizing the show,” he said.

SAC Events Limited highlighted in the statement that the postponement is not the fault of Banda.

“We at SAC Events would like to make it clear that the postponement of this concert is not due to Lucius and the Zembani Band.

In fact, Lucius went to great endeavors to resolve the situation, he is very disappointed and is committed to a rescheduled date,” said the statement.

SAC Events disclosed that they are preparing new dates for the show.

Meanwhile, reports were rife that musician-cum-politician Billy Kaunda will perform instead of Lucious.

Kaunda who is also deputy minister of tourism is currently in England. He insisted that it was not going to be possible for him to perform.

Kaunda performed in Nottingham and Manchester in Christmas festive season of 2006.

My heartfelt condolences to all those who spent their hard earned money in buying clothes, accessories, hair do’* and haircuts, pre-purchasing of the tickets, deodorants, cologne and perfume, fake wigs, braids, Vaseline, toothpaste, fake nails, soap, makeup and that discreet pack of condoms just in case. How dare those British embassy officials complicate matters in what has now become a visa-gate scandal of horrendous proportions. * am sure everyone affected still has their receipts so that they can get refunds from; the show’* organisers, hair stylists, clothes shops be it: House of Fraser, Harrods, Asda, Alibabas, Morris Mini Market, Selfridges, Gucci, 7 Eleven, Meijer, Walmart, K-mart, French Connection, Nandos, Lunzu or your local vendor located in downtown Manchester, Blantyre, Mishawaka, Lilongwe, Nottingham, South Bend. How dare those British be so stingy with their visa? How dare them, do they have any idea what we hard working Malawians went through in preparations for this once in a life-time concert? £30 for the ticket alone roughly equates to Mk9,000, that is more than the majority of hard working Malawian labour force earn in a month. How dare those British interfere with what was supposed to be the gig of the century, bigger than the late Lucky Dubes shindig at Kamuzu stadium? The cancellation is surely more depressing than when Michael Jackson’* hair caught fire during a Pespi commercial. My heart-felt condolences to you all, but look on the brighter positive side; at least you have added a new outfit to your wardrobe and you must admit that the new hairstyle for the she-club or haircut for the male species will look nice come Monday morning.

* have an idea. Why don'* we all Malawians buy air tickets and fly back home to see soldier perform. (Since we don'* need visas to enter Malawi) although the problem might arise when the show is over and we have to come back to Mangalande. 95% of us would not make it, due to the expired Visas in our passports, the 6 months Visitor’* Visa that have now clocked years, the Student Visa even though we have never seen the college we were meant to be going to, the Spouse Visa even though we are divorced from our spouse etc etc ... let us not point fingers at Soldier.
Most of us are here by some sheer luck, accident, matsenga, kusamba, makani, kuponda or grace of god. If we were to re-apply for a Visa, the British embassy would surely do a "soldier" on us. That is why the majority of us go back home by one name (Abiti Febe or che Baisikolo) and come back by another name (Mai Fane or Pastor Kafoja). Soldier needs to reapply for his Visa using a different name; Ninja or Nsilikali, those damn British people will not know any better. VISA GRANTED Mr Lucius Nsilikali Banda.
Ma visa, ma visa! Forgery, is a Malawian speciality. In the states Malawians forge Social Security Cards to gain employment, in the UK they simply work under a different name using someone elses valid passport. That is why most Malawians get heart attacks, stomach ulcers or simply diarrhoea (wa mpedzepedze) when they hear the words “Home Office” or INS. Olemekezeka Bwana LuciusSoldier Banda forged his MSCE certificate, a minor offence compared to most of us who have done some serious forgery or two. We should be proud of our expertise in the art of using tipex (whiteout), photocopying machine and sleek magical deception. It’* a jungle out there, survival of the fittest is the name of the game. Dog eat Dog. Who has ever seen Kamuzu’* degree? Forging is in our blood that is why Malawians have penetrated each and every country on earth. * am proud to be a Malawian but that does not mean that * will forget my £30 * paid to go and see soldier. It was a genuine £30 not a forged one (* WANT IT BACK)

Lucius is the best musician to come from our country EVER - including those now *** feet under like Namoko, Samangaya, Matafale et cetera; and am positive, this absolves him of any responsibilities. The organisers should have known better before they put the show together. Next time, please get the visa'* first (like a month or two in advance) then start advertising. Am sure its a lesson learnt the harder way. Good luck guys, the organisers and the ever green Lucius!

Nyasa Times why did you not advise Banda, about is criminal record? Did you think that forgery by a UDF fanatic was a lesser crime? We rightful thinking Malawian also believe that crimes commited by UDF are just as bad as those commided by MCP and DPP, at least MCP developed the country, DPP is developing the country. What did UDF do? And you have the audacity to say Muluzi will win?
Let this Banda issue be a wake up call.

Stay away from crime and you will travel freely worldwide. Its as simple as that, no country will be happy to entertain a convicted criminal. Its not Malawi where laws are just but on paper. One Lucius Banda should clear his name from the criminal conviction list before he can travel to UK or elsewhere where there is true rule of law. Stay out of crime Lucius dont forge anymore documents!

* am very sorry for Malawians living in Diaspora especaially UK.Joza is very correct. How can pple start spending on a Criminal-it shows that whoever bought the ticket in advance subscribe to criminalogy.UK is not malawi where criminals are celebrities.Do not blame the Uk home office-the only person you can blame is Lucius himself because he wanted to steal from you pple.* do not believe that lucius is so dull that he does not know that he is a criminal. He was supposed to check first be4 confirming his partcipation whether it is possible for a forger to enter UK.

Forgery ndi tchimo lalikulu. Lucious is simply reaping what he sowed. * can see that now Lucious will now understand consequnces of being careless. While * acknowledge the talent Lucious has in music, the guy became drunk and thought could be do better in politics. He was fooled by Muluzi and ended up forging what could not acquire in class - MSCE. The Forgery will leave to haunt Lucious and * can now start doubting whether this guy will ever set his foor again in UK or USA. FORGERY IS A SERIOUS CRIME! The Best Lucious can do is to concentrate on concerts in Kawale or Balaka kapena ku Lunzu.

When applying for visa they ask have you ever been convicted of any crime or if you have any case pending in a court of law. They do not ask this question for the sake of aking. Lucius and the organisers should have known in advance of this hiccup. This is also a lesson to others commiting a crime will affect us in many ways than we think.

Reliable sources say that the cancellation of the trip has nothing to do with visas. Rumour has it that those who parted with the £30 will not be getting their money back. * could be wrong but that is what my sources are telling me. £30 is what most Malawians make in day here in the UK. Wina waweluka. Credit Crunch alleviation, * have a feeling this is a well orchestrated scam. £30 multiply by 2,000 (expected crowd) equals £60,000. Thats not a bad gross profit (ka mpamba).

Easy Bambo Boniface Chidyautsiku, * did not accuse my fellow beloved country men (and women) of forgery. * am just stating facts of which you are well aware of. Not everyone resorts to forging, but if it is the only answer to putting nsima on the nkeka, then why not. If you have not forged in your life in order to achieve something, then * respect you. Some of us have, and those of us who have (and have been lucky not get caught - yet) we should not laugh and point fingers at baba soldier. Trust me, if Malawi was rich to the point of kutapa kutaya these British people would be forging (passports, work permits a.k.a ziphatso) in order to come and work in Nyasaland. Don’* be ashamed of our expertise in forging, be proud of it. By the way * think your name is a forged one too. Forgery is what makes nyasatimes interesting; most of the stories here are spiced up with a little bit of nchere, tsabola ndi kale. Forgery bambo.
