Access Multi-Media has commenced a legal battle against Excite Media for holding the Miss Malawi beauty pageant which Chancellor College student, Ella Kabambe was crowned the new queen last week.

The law suit has been lodged at Blantyre High Court is also aimed at nullifying the Miss Malawi Public Trust that was launched when Kabambe was crowned new ‘Miss Malawi’.

Director of Access Multimedia, Symon Yohane said: “There is a court case where the High Court will determine the legitimacy of the Lilongwe show in relation to trademark patterned.”

He said the newly crowned beauty queen is not being recognized and that the 2008 Miss Malawi, Joyce Mphande  still holds the crown until matters are resolved by the court.

Apparently, Mphande (pictured) did not handover her crown during the show which took place last Friday at Capital Hotel in Lilongwe.

“In our function we are going to invite Joyce Mphande to hand over the crown,” he said.

The Miss Malawi Public Trust was endorsed by Minister of Tourism and Culture Anna Kachikho.

But Yohane wondered government’s involvement in a public trust for the beauty pageant.

Yohane also pointed out that Excite Media owes the 2008 Miss Malawi and her first princess Karen Chimkwita their prize money.

“We are trying to find out, is it government who didn’t give those monies last year. If is indeed this thing is for government then it means government has messed things up,” he said.

“Miss Malawi is just an event, it was a concept which was developed by somebody else but that concept falls under the ministry of culture but that doesn’t mean that it is owned by that ministry,” he pointed out.

He also branded Excite Media officials as liars saying Carver Bhima who has been associated with the pageant is “taking action” against the organizers for claiming that he was a trustee of Miss Malawi.

Communications consultant for Excite Events Kondwani Munthali was not immediately available for comment but Nyasa Times has emailed a questioner to him.
