Lulu quits Zembani to form his band
Singer Lawrence Khwisa of ‘Magwiragwira’ fame well known as Lulu has quit Zembani band of popular musician, Lucius Banda to form his own band.
Lulu confirmed to Nyasa Times that he has formed The Mathumela Band because he considers himself to be of age in the music industry.
“The idea to come up with a band stems from the fact that I have learnt a lot from Lucius Banda, having played with him for some time. I believe now it’s time to taste the waters and see what the future holds for me,” Lulu told Nyasa Times.
The singer said he has left the Zembani band on good terms with Lucius Banda.
“There are no disagreements with Lucius or that there is no bad blood between us. It’s purely a career move that I am taking to explore own abilities as an artist and see how far I can’ expand this envelope,” he said.
The singer said the Mathumela band comprises veteran musicians and some budding singers.
He said he will now record music under the brand – Lulu and The Mathumela Band.
“I have gone into a management agreement with Phingo Projects- which is a local management company. Phingo Projects is a well established professional management company that will help me to establish myself as a solid brand in Malawi.
“Apart from promoting me, Phingo Projects will manage the day to day activities of both Lulu and the Mathumela band,” he said
According to Lulu, his live performances will incorporate drama and dance into all songs and acts and involve audience.
He said Mathumela band will soon release an album and embark of a national tour. They are also planning to perform in England where he had shows with Zembani.
