Miss Malawi Trust to bring ‘sanity’ to the pageant- Munthali
The concept of Miss Malawi Trust is to bring sanity to the Miss Malawi beauty contest and elevate it to public entity, Excite Media consultant, Kondwani Munthali told Nyasa Times.
According to Munthali, private companies have failed to run the show with scandals of nonpayment and sexual harassment of beauty queens.
“Members of the committee proposed to government that instead of Miss Malawi being run as a private entity, let it be run by a public trust,” Munthali explained.
He was reacting to accusation by Access Media that the Miss Malawi Trust was established fraudulently and that Caver Bhima has denied that he is not a trustee.
“The committee that organized the 2009 Miss Malawi, proposed a representative from government, private sector, youth representative, media representative, a former Miss Malawi and one from Excite Events and Mr. Bhima to form a committee to steer the process of registering a public trust to run Miss Malawi,” pointed out Munthali.
“We strongly believe that this is the only way Miss Malawi pageant will retain its credibility unlike the current scenario and many companies have come forward to support the idea,” he emphasized.
Munthali said advised Access Media to contact the Department of Culture and see how they can participate in re-organizing Miss Malawi “if they are serious about serving Malawians not reaping off Malawians.”
The current Miss Malawi is Ella Kabambe, a Chancellor College student.
