Malawi wallops Zimbabwe in UK social football

It is not often that Zimbabweans are lost for words for they talk big, but such was the case – albeit briefly – in the aftermath of a destructive result of a social football between Zimbabwe and Malawi played in England on Sunday.

Malawi team won 6-4 a result that effectively ended their supremacy in a well attended match played at Nottingham Forest play ground.

Though social, but Malawi side featured former Under-21 and Super League Club, Civo United’s Sinka Makaniankhondo and Nicholas Munthali who secured victory for the Malawi side after coming in as substitutes.

Zimbabwe threw away 3-0 lead to hand Malawi a victory. They scored through in-form Yaw Gyekye, Thumelo Hove and Frank O’callghan. Michael Mandaza despite not registering his name in the score sheet was a marvel to watch.

Malawi came breathing with fire in the second segment of the game and scored through Garnet Kamwendo and Peter Makosa.

Makosa yawned the net again but his goal was disallowed.

The introduction of Makaniankhondo and Munthali, who has just wedded, put Zimbabwe on their back foot as Malawi players came running and attacking like hungry marauding lions from Kasungu national park.

Makaniankhondo was brought down in the scoring zone and earned Malawi a penalty which Munthali scored by sending the goalkeeper a wrong side.

Malawi scored other goals through Chimwemwe Msisha and Welling Msungama.

There was also good show from Frank Kunje and John Damba who played like professionals.

Malawi team manager Rowland Mahata praised the players for raising the country flag.

“We have made Malawi proud by winning, families should be encouraged to watch these matches in series that we have lined up during summer,” said Mahata who is also secretary of Malawi Association Midlands.

Malawi team in UK will next play Somali, South Africa and Jamaica.

Mahata said during the next matches they will beef up the team with other Malawian players.Malawian players expected to join the squad include MacDonald Yobe, John Nkwazi, Osborne Nkhwazi, and Tenzo Moyo.
