Tay Grin celebrates Channel O award with local fans
Fêted hip-hop artist Tay Grin recently made history by becoming the first Malawian to win a Channel O Music Award as he topped the ‘Most Gifted Duo or Group Video’ category, which also had nominees P Square and D’Banj (Nigeria), Da L.E.S (South Africa), Kalibrados (Angola) and Mwana Fa (Tanzania).
The Nyau King, who failed to get any award in the first two years of his nomination, starting 2007, this year got three nominations namely ‘Most Gifted Southern African Video’ and ‘Most Young Gifted & African Award’ for ‘Moto’ featuring Wendy Harawa and ‘Most Gifted Duo or Group Video’ for the winning track ‘My Type of Guy’, a collaboration with Namibia’s Gal Level and Zimbabwe’s Buffalo Souljah.
As a way of expressing gratitude and celebrating with his home fans as well as the country for their support, especially through the votes that earned the rapper and Malawi’s showbiz all together an historic honour, Tay Grin is hosting what he describes as “award winning parties” in the cities of Blantyre and Lilongwe.
In an interview with Nyasa Times, Tay Grin, who is the only Malawian musician to ever be nominated for the continent’s leading music awards for ‘Young and Gifted’ artists, disclosed the celebratory parties will be held on the nights of November 27 and December 4 at Blantyre and Lilongwe’s Twigga Lounge, respectively.
“This is an appreciation to the fans and I want everyone to come and join me. I want to show Malawians that they’re part of it [the award], and this will be their chance to come and see it because they contributed a lot to winning the award, which wasn’t easy competing with the likes of P Square and D’Banj,” pointed out the rapper.
While revealing fans will have time to pose for photos with the award, Tay Grin also said there will be performances by local hip-hop crowd puller Young Kay, R&B sensation Theo Thomson, himself and some top Malawian DJs.
The rapper also disclosed Zimbabwean award winning Dancehall king Buffalo Souljah will grace the Lilongwe party, which he believes was good timing for people in the capital to have a feel of an international performance by Buffalo Souljah.
Since he came on the limelight two years ago, Tay Grin has since hosted three shows (two international) during the launch of his debut CD ‘Proudly African’ (2007) as well as the second CD ‘Nyau King’ pre- launch party and its official unveiling in Blantyre.
“For a longer time people in Lilongwe have been saying I leave them out of fun events and I don’t bring big artists in the city so Buffalo is available on that day.
“I would have loved to have Gal Level as well but they will be busy with other tours on the set dates and because I wanted to have these celebrations as early as possible because closer to the end of the year I will be doing a lot of work and traveling,” indicated the Nyau King, who is scheduled to soon start promotional tours for his latest album across the continent.
