Ethiopian ‘illegal immigrant’ found dead in Malawi, Police arrest 36 others
Police in Malawi’s northern border district of Karonga have found a dead body of an Ethiopian illegal immigrant who was dumped near St. Annes Roman Catholic hospital along Karonga-Mzuzu M1 road and arrest 36 others in the process.
Officer-in- Charge for Chilumba Police Alimakiya Daka says the illegal immigrants were travelling in unknown vehicle heading to Mzuzu city.
“It is suspected that these illegal immigrants were packed like sacks in a car which led to the death of one member due to fatigue and hunger,” said Daka.
He also says “we were very surprised when we saw a dead body of the Ethiopian when we were doing our duties around 4pm today (Friday) and we were very sure that others are within the vicinity and we found them at Hangalawe 90 kilometers from Karonga town.”
Daka adds that it is alleged that the car abandoned them in the way as the illegal immigrants were found walking on foot and very exhausted.
He says the illegal immigrants are in police custody waiting for trial while the dead body of their friend is being kept at Karonga District Hospital.
