EX-councillor stops  by-election, obtains court injunction

A convicted former ward councillor for Bembeke in Dedza has obtained a court injunction restraining the Malawi Electoral Commission from holding a local government  by-election on November 1.

Judiciary spokesperson Mlenga Mvula confirmed Davie Lingalawe has obtained the court injunction from the High Court in Lilongwe.

Lingalawe was convicted of tampering with Escom prepaid meter at his house in Dedza so that he could not be paying electricity bills.

District Commissioner for Dedza James Kanyangaladzi confirmed having received the court injuction.

“The Malawi Electoral Commission will decide on the way forward,” he said.

Pollster officials were not readily available for comment.

The commission will be holding a couple of local government by elections and one parliamentary byelection in Mchinji West.
