Ex-Malawi BBA rep Natasha Tonthola launches music career

Natasha Tonthola is generally viewed as Malawi’s former representative at the Big Brother Africa (BBA) reality TV show, however now she can add musician to her list of talents.

The 27-year-old has officially launched her music career with the release of her debut song titled #TIA (This Is Africa), which she has collaborated with Lilongwe-based producer and singer Janta of S.U Records.

A couple of weeks ago, Natasha performed the song at the “Summer returns” show featuring former Zambian BBA housemate Cleo Ice Queen, before she also performed it at hip-hop artist Tay Grin’s Beffta Award celebrations in Lilongwe.

The dancehall song went on Malawian radios this week and has started getting good reviews after it also went online on the malawi-music.com streaming and download site as well as on the DStv website.

Natasha, who was recently part of 10 ex-housemates who stormed the just ended Big Brother Hotshots for a week, said music has been one of her hidden talents and now it was time for her to do music.

“I want people to take me seriously music-wise. T.I.A is the beginning of it all. I’m working on an album with Janta and it’s on the corner,” she explained. “I have been a singer all my life but now am a brand that is destined to make a difference through music, which is like therapy to me.”

Also known as Mama Africa, Natasha disclosed that her debut song was all about celebrating the love for Africa. “#TIA for me means one love, one blood, one Africa.”

She said working with someone like Janta, she was confident her music was going to go places and take Malawi and Africa by storm.

“I am working with a multitalented producer who understands music, a good producer who has produced for the likes of Lucius Banda, Dan Lu, Gwamba and Nesnes, among others, and I believe I will go places,” pointed out Natasha.

Before she came in the limelight through the BBA, Natasha used to perform with ethno musician Waliko Makhala.

A child and women rights activist, in 2011 Natasha started an organisation known as the Mama Africa Foundation Trust, which focuses on workplace and household gender related issues.

The foundation aims to empower women economically by giving them adaptive tools and skills for sustainable livelihood in their communities.

Natasha’s goal is to become a UN Goodwill Ambassador for girls and women’s rights.
