Fake Malawi Kwacha in circulation: Man arrested with K78, 000 counterfeit

Police in central region district of Nkhotakota are keeping in custody Edward Josiah for being in possession of fake currency amounting to K78,000 .

Josiah 25 years-old and hails from Kaphanga village, T/A Khombedza in Salima was arrested on Saturday, Nkhotakota Police Public Relations Officer, Williams Kaponda has said.

Kaponda said Josiah was arrested with the aid of some vendors trading at Nkhotakota bus depot.

“The suspect wanted to buy about 300 kilograms of rice from some vendors at K260 per kg. Fortunately one of the vendors noted that some of the banknotes Josiah gave them were fake,” explained Kaponda.

He added “One of the vendors noted that the money given- K1 000 bank notes had different feature. He then informed his friends and managed to apprehend the suspect.”.

He said according to one statement recorded from one of the three vendors, the suspect on his way to police offered a bribe of K4 000 to each vendor which they denied.
