FAM honours Malawi’s football legends: Kinnah, Kalombo decorated

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) bestowed awards to four football personalities for contributing to football development in the country in their respective roles during the Constitutional meeting held at Livingstonia Beach in Salima on Saturday.

Fam honoured Malawi national football legend Kinnah Phiri for his contribution both as a player and coach for the team, Bester Kalombo for being one of Malawi best ever referees who is the only one to have officiated at Africa Cup of Nations finals as a referee in the history of football in the country.

Moffat Champiti is another Malawian who achieved Kalombo’s feat but as assistant referee.

Sydney Dawson Chikafa was also recognized for his contribution as the FAM’s pioneer president while Anderson Zimba, who once served as the association’s acting president and a long time serving member was also honoured.

They received certificates of recognition for their achievements.

Kinnah was household name in the 70s when his scoring prowess won Malawi East and Central Africa Senior Challenge Cup in 1978 and 1979 and was one of the forces behind his club Bata Bullets success.

He also guided the Flames to their second Africa Cup of Nations appearance in Angola 2010 as a coach after leading Bullets to a fairy-tale run in the Caf Champions League in 2004 when the club was enjoying massive sponsorship from former president Bakili Muluzi.
