Female presidential ticket: Singh picks lady Tembo as runningmate
The second woman in Malawi to become a candidate for president, United Independent Party (UIP) president Helen Singh, presented her nomination papers to electoral officials on Monday with a woman as a runningmate.
Loveness Gondwe, a former deputy speaker of parliament, was a first woman to contest on the presidential ticket in 2009 but performed dismally.
President Joyce Banda was the first woman to be on the ballot paper as a runningmate to late president Bingu wa Mutharika. She will be seeking her own mandate for the first time in May 20 polls.
Presenting her nomination papers, Singh who has picked business lady, Chrissy Tembo from Traditional Authority Mabilabo in Mzimba, as her running mate said the winner of the forthcoming elections will be chosen by God.
Singh, who started her speech with Christian and Muslim slogans of Hallelujah and Asalam Alaikum, expressed optimism that she was the chosen one.
