Eyewitnesses said the fire started around afternoon Tuesday from one of the shops and quickly spread to other shops, adding that an electrical fault was suspected.

Millions worth of goods and money went up in flames during the time the inferno raged.

The Kachikungu parking lot manager Godfrey Chimdzeka said the fire was caused by sparks from an electricity main pole near the shop that caught fire.

An official from Electricity Supply Commission of Malawi (ESCOM),  not authoritsed to grant interview to the media said the commission would investigate if the fire was caused by an electrical fault.

No one was, however, injured during the fire, according to police.
