Mbayani market went up in flames Sunday night, reducing the shops to mere smouldering rubble.

The cause of the fire, claimed to have started around 8pm, is yet to be  established.

No injuries were reported save for traders who were shocked upon seeing the ashes that had been their merchandise. Vendors suspect the fire originated from some restaurant stalls in the market.

The incident follows another recently where Tsoka Flea Market and Mzuzu market were also destroyed. Property estimated at K1.2 billion was destroyed in the fires that occurred at Mzuzu and Tsoka markets.

President Peter Peter Mutharika instituted a ministerial committee to look into the occurrences and come up with lasting solutions to the problem.

Its a little suspisious that we are getting all these market fires! a good study dhould be done to correct the problem from the basic cause? it is arson? is it politicallymotivated? are the structures lacking in the markets?Something very drastuc needs to happen to stop these fires. Restructiring si very necessaryStrict regulations should be passed and obeyed. This is dangerous.

Yesterniht it was Mbayani market, this morning it was chisakasa under Escom wires close to Chemussa market. Someone is playing with fire. I think the authorities need to insist of fire prevention procedures anywhere public in Malawi. I was concerned with the Chemussa fire, where had it spread would have set ablaze one of the most highly concentrated residential village of Mbayani/Chemussa Magasa where no fire engine can reach and the terrain is totally hilly and impossible to navigate. Reminds me of the fire of London or Chicago.
