Four children drown in Mzimba stream

Four children from different families drowned on Sunday morning as they attempted to cross Mtenthe Stream in Mzimba district to harvest mangoes on the other side.

The quartet all from Galamala Mgungwe village , Paramount Chief M’mbelwa are; Apronia Phiri, 11, Prince Bambilo, 9, Milika Bambilo, 7, and Eliza Msimuko, 7.

The fifth one, Elube Kumwenda, 13, survived and reported the incident to elders.

Mzuzu Police Station Publicist Sergeant Gift Nyirongo confirmed the development saying Police have recovered all the bodies of the deceased.

According to Nyirongo, this is the second recorded officially incident of children drowning while attempting to cross rivers or streams.

Postmortem reports from Mzimba District Hospital indicate the cause of deaths due to suffocation.

“On December 21, 2013 at Milala River in the same area three children aged 11, 14, and 16 respectively also drowned.

“Therefore as Police, we are appealing to the general public to take precaution measures to ensure the safety of children and people with mental illnesses especially those who are living along the rivers,” the Police Publicist said.
