The Reserve Bank of Malawi sponsored team had warned that they would not fulfil their fixture, citing the prize money as manifestly inadequate.

The K45 million per year FISD Challenge Cup, starting this weekend, is set to be competed for by TNM 16 Super League and 29 district teams who won the 2016 Presidential Cup district championship.

And the bankers argued that the prize money is not enough comparing to expenses the team will incur while playing during home and away matches.

The club’s officials had said the team will only participate if they play all games at home including the final if they can make it that far, adding they better use the money which can be used on FISD cup to pay players’ signing on-fee and other debts.

But the club has changed its position, saying they will fight for the silverware, according to general secretary Thabo Chakaka-Nyirenda.

“We are competiting in the FISD Cup. Silver for the cup,” Nyirenda said.

Silver Strikers face Max Bullets at Silver Stadium in their first cup match on Saturday.

The preliminary round for the Super League teams in Malawi’s FISD Challenge Cup will be played this weekend.

National champions for this new knockout cup shall receive K10 million, runners-up K4 million and K1 million for semifinalists.

The regional champions will receive MK1 million, runners-up K500,000 and K250,000 for the third place

In individual prizes, the top goal scorer at national stage will receive K200,000; the  top goal scorer at regional level MK50,000 while another K50,000 will be for man of the match from quarterfinals at national stage.

As an incentives, each of the 29 district teams will get a starter pack of K100,000.

The tournament is sponsored by Foundation of Irrigation and Sustainable Development (FISD) by committing a K45 million annual sponsorship for five years. FAM and FISD signed a five-year contract for the sponsorship of the competition on 9th June 2016.

Regional finals will be held on15-16 October and the national round of 16 to be played on 22-23 October. The quarterfinals will be on November 4-5, the semifinals on November 19-20 and the final on December 10.
