GD and Rina star in new movie ‘The Designer’

If you thought GD and Rina were only good at rap music, then  wait until you see the two putting their acting skills on full display as they star in a new Malawian movie “The Designer”.

The love love film tells the story of a designer (played by Vinjeru Kamanga) who was dumped by her boyfriend Ryan (GD) who went abroad. Years later, she was unknowingly consulted to plan the wedding of the ex-lover who was getting married to a new girl (played by Times TV personality Simunye Nyamali).

“Acting is something I’ve always been interested in and when the chance came to portray a complex and interesting character I took the shot,” GD, a rapper and record producer told Nyasa Showbiz.

The Daredevilz member indicated that after appearing in the movie, he wants to explore his acting skills further. “At first it was just something on my bucket list but I enjoyed every minute of it. If the right role comes again am sure I’ll take it”.

“The Designer” was written and directed by 17-year-old girl Chimwemwe Mkwezalamba and is set to be premiered on this coming Sunday, 29th March 2015 at Steers Garden in Blantyre, courtesy of Nyasa Films and Dikamawoko Arts.

“It’s a very interesting film with fascinating scene,” explained the female movie writer and director.

According to her, “The Designer” was shot in 2013 on a small budget and almost all actors in the film appeared in it for free as there was no funding for the shooting, except the support they had from Dikamawoko Arts’ Tawonga Nkhonjera who helped some financial support and editing.

After directing the film about two years ago, Mkwezalamba was voted Best Imaging Director during the Silicon Valley African film festival in USA when she was only 16 years old.

During the movie premiere on Sunday, the audience will also be entertained music performances by Mafo, K1 and Fredokis. The guest of honour to the event will be the Blantyre City Mayor Noel Chalamanda.

Some of the guests listed to attend the movie premiere include Hip Hop superstar Tay Grin, fashion designer Lily Alfonso, film writer and director Shemu Joyah as well as actor and radio personality Hope Chisanu.
