Govt ‘bribe’ chiefs to reject North Malawi secession calls
The governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has gone flat out in the North Malawi to lure influential voices in rejecting calls for north secession or referendum.
In his latest engagement and palm oil, presidential advisor on National unity and parliamentary affairs, Symon Vuwa Kaunda, on Sunday met chiefs from Rumphi let by Paramount Themba la ma Themba Chikulamayembeto persuade them to reject calls for North Malawi to be a standalone country or the introduction of federal system of government.
Paramount Chikulamayembe said the chiefs will campaign for government’s stand to keep Malawi together.
“We should avid separation. I am happy that government is waken-up and now campaign against secession,” said Chikulamayembe.
In his remarks sub-Traditional Authority Chisovya said as chiefs they will not allow anybody to bring confusion among the people of Malawi.
‘’This is peaceful state why do you want to bring war; division of the country will benefit us nothing apart from war,” he said.
Chisovya resorted in local direct Tumbuka by saying *uyowakukhumba kugawa chalo ichi wajikakendipotchewezimulye (anyone who want to divide this country should hang himself and die, dogs should eat his corps.)
Traditional Authority Mwankhunikira, who was also present at the meeting , accused former ruling People’s Party provincial governor Rev Christopher Mzomera Ngwira for promoting secession.
‘As Rumphi Chiefs we will work together with the DPP-led government ounder the leadership of Prof.Arthur Peter Muthalika,’’ he said.
The chief also thank presidential advisor for the monetary “gifts” he gave them from President Mutharika.
Chiefs that were present at the National dialogue meeting included Themba la ma Themba Chikulamayembe the Tumbukaking, T/A Jalavikuwa,ST/A Kachulu ,T/A .
The meeting was also attended by Deputy Minister of defense who is also Member of Parliament for Rumphi north Jappi Mtuwa Mhango.
Mzomera Ngwira has since accused government “ panic measure” and offering bribes to chiefs.
