According to our source, he came across the sad development on 3rd February 2017.

“I just came across a sad story at Balaka Hospital. Security guards are demanding K100 from everyone sleeping on the veranda when the hospital wards are full. Yesterday [3rd February,2017] it rained almost the whole night and they [Guardians] were forced to stand but the K100’s were still at force,” narrated the source.

The source said the guards claimed that the money collected is used to buy blooms and torch batteries.

Officials from the Balaka District Hospital refused to comment on the matter.

But one staff member , who did not want his identity to be revealed because she is not authorised to speak to the media,  admitted the practice might be happening.

“That might be happening as you know those guards are human beings and they lack alot of things so you cannot rule that out” she said.

One of the security guards at the hospital confirmed the development.

“Ndizoona timawalipilitsa kumene (It is true we do ask them to pay)” she said.

She also revealed that anyone who go to the hospital to visit a patient using a bicycle also pay a fee for his bike to be secured.

The guards on duty share the money when knocking off.

On several occassions, visitors have had their bikes stollen a development that leave them with no choice but to pay for their bicycles to be safe.
