Health worker arrested over drug theft, granted bail: Updated

Malawi Police in Phalombe on Monday 25th January, 2016 arrested a 22-year-old medical assistant for allegedly stealing government drugs worthy over MK 841, 500.00.

The suspect Chimwemwe Maurisu of Mphonde village T/A Ngabu in Chikwawa was working under Phalombe District Health Office as a Medical Assistant at Kalinde Health Centre.

According to Phalombe police Public Relations Officer, Augustus Nkhwazi told Nyasa Times that Maurisu was arrested after he allegedly failed to account for 69 boxes of LA (Co-artem) of different packages and sizes.

”This took place in the period between July 2014 to May 2015. The medical drugs  valued at MK841, 500.00,” explained Nkhwazi.

The drugs are said to have been sold to a former sales representative of the Population Services International (PSI) Adriel Jumbe, 36, of Kolore village T/A Santhe in Kasungu.

”The said medical drugs were then being sold to private hospitals across the country by the second suspect (Jumbe)”.

Jumbe has also been arrested and is currently being held at National Police Head Office in Lilongwe.

And on Tuesday, Phalombe First Grade Magistrate Court granted the suspect  Chimwemwe Maurisu bail after he pleaded not guilty to the charge of Theft by Public Servant contrary to Section 283 of the Penal Code.

Maurisu paid a bail bond of K10, 500 cash, and has been ordered to be reporting to Phalombe Police once every week.

The case goes for hearing on 17th February, 2016.

Meanwhile, Maurisu’s accomplice, Jumbe is under National Police custody

The country’s public hospitals continue to face drug shortage due to pilferages orchestrated by public servants.
