How Kasambara knew Prophet Elias Gama: Malawi cash-gate

Investigations carried out by Nyasa Times into why former Minister of Justice Ralph Kasambara,  charged with attempt murder of Budget Director Paul Mphwiyo, mentioned Prophet Elias to be among his witness in the case has established that the ‘Man of God’ who runs Prophet Elias ministries in Chirimba township in Blantyre, once prayed for Kasambara “for protection from public wrath” soon after the botched assassination of Mphwiyo.

Kasambara, one of the country’s prominent lawyers and a senior counsel (SC),  named President Joyce Banda, Cecilia Kumpukwe ( a sister to President Banda), Information Minister Brown Mpinganjira, ruling PP spokesman Hophmally Makande and Prophet Elias to be his witnesses.

Sources close to the Prophet, told Nyasa Times investigation crew on Tuesday that Brown Mpinganjira who had also sometimes attended prayers at Prophet Elias ministries had once confided to the Prophet that there is a cabinet minister who may need his help for “something that has went wrong for him” to which the prophet said he should bring him forth.

“This is when Mpinganjira introduced Kasambara to the prophet but the prayers were conducted in Machinjiri Township with the help of a bishop of another ministry (Names of a Bishop, his Ministry and location, deliberately withheld). Hence Kasambara thought that Prophet Elias lives in Machinjiri.  We don’t really know what the prayers were all about but it seems Kasambara is mentioning the Man of God to be his witness because he feels that his prayers were not answered as he has now been arrested,” said the sources.

Kasambara: Stepping out of police car on arrival at court

The sources said Mpinganjira a self-styled Evangelist, has been a regular visitor to Prophet Elias Ministries after he prophesized that he would be appointed cabinet minister in President Joyce Banda’s administration, a prophesy  which came to pass when President Banda appointed him Minister of Water Development before switching him to be government spokesman.

The ruling People’s Party, Publicity Secretary, Hophmally Makande is also reported have been seen at the  Prophet Elias Ministries. He is said to have gone there “for protection” from involvement into the scandal which would ruin his political reputation.

“In fact all of them were not clear on what wrong they had committed but Makande said there were some cheques that were yet to be cleared and feared he might lose those money”.

The Prophet has since said he does not know what Kasambara wants him in court for.

The prophet, full name Elias Mussa Gama, has however indicated that he would respect the laws of Malawi if summoned to go to court and testify.

“But honestly, I don’t know what Mr Kasambara wants me for; I don’t know the kind of evidence he is looking from me.

“But what I know is that Mr Kasambara has been coming to my church, Prophet Elias Ministry Church, to pray with us for the past five weeks. As of now, I cannot say anything until the time I appear in court,” Gama is quoted as saying.

In a related development the Nyasa Times investigation crew, has established that Minster of Tourism Moses Kunkuyu, has shut down his car hire company and sent all the drivers on leave for fear of being investigated on how he managed to purchase 32 vehicles at once used as taxis there.

One of the drivers on leave told Nyasa Times that Kunkuyu’s company named Pika Car Hire, had offices near Crossroads Hotel in the capital, Lilongwe.

“I don’t know if Pika Manondo (a prime suspect in the assassination attempt of Mphwiyo) has shares in it or it’s just a name, but what we know is that our boss was Moses Kunkuyu and the company has been shut down.”
