I’m not under arrest – Mphwiyo

Gun-shot survivor former budget director Paul Mphwiyo has told Nyasa Times in an interview that he is not under arrest as rumours went viral on social media that he was in police custody.

Reports have been rife that Police arrested Mphwiyo in Lilongwe at Kamuzu International Airport as he was about to leave the country.

Malawi Police spokesperson Rhoda Manjolo also feigned ignorance on the arrest of Mphwiyo.

“We are not keeping Mphwiyo,” Manjolo said.

Asked if he was picked, Manjolo said she had no such information.

Manjolo could not deny or confirm on the reports of Mphwiyo being stopped from going outside the country referring the Nyasa Times to speak to the Office of President and Cabinet.

“I cannot comment on that one, you better talk to OPC,” said Manjolo before she cut the line.

OPC spokesperson Arthur Chipendo could not be reached.

Nyasa Times reporter caught up with Mphwiyo at Mtengowathenga Hospital in the afternoon of Monday and interviewed him.

Asked what he was doing, Mphwiyo said: “I came to visit a friend who is receiving medical attention.”

Pressed if he was arrested at the airport, Mphwiyo said “arrest, no , no no.”

“I am not under arrest,” said the gun-shot survivor.

But one of Mphwiyo’s shooting suspect, former Justice Minister Ralph Kasambara posted on Facebook: “Latest reports coming from the police is that he has been released but his passport has been detained by the police. Matter waiting further directives from above.”

Police could not verify Kasambara’s claims.

Minister of Justice Fahad Assani has however said Mphwiyo was not running away ,  saying he had a  scheduled check up in South Africa “but the state is yet to give a legal opinion” .

The shooting of Mphwiyo in September as he drove into his Area 43 home in Lilongwe opened a Pandora box of the massive looting of public resources dubbed “cashgate.”

In a sworn affidavit, said he was receiving death threats prior to his fate in connection with his tough public finance and economic management measures that that have closed pilfering loopholes at Capital Hill.
