Ireen Chikapa snubs Chakwera, rejects MCP post

Law expert Ireen Chikapa has demanded that her name be withdrawn as legal advisor of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to which he was appointed by the party’s president Lazarous Chakwera.

MCP insiders said Chikapa does not want to appear on the MCP national executive list.

“She has demanded her name be withdrawn,” said a source.

Chikapa was removed as Deputy Commissioner for Lands-Legal Services during the DPP regime and posted to Ministry of Labour before government interdicted her on flimsy accusations.

She reportedly refused to give land title deeds back to Zaeer Sacrane, son of the owner of Cresta Crossroads Hotel.

The “falsely obtained” title deed was cancelled by her hence provoking Sacrane to issue threats that they are dealing with the late President Bingu wa Mutharika directly and his brother Peter Mutharika.

The land is in Area 9 and as foreigners they are not entitled to own land in Malawi under the Land Act.

Sacrane hired former Presidential Legal Counsel Allan Ntata to represent him in the matter.

A sum of K20 million was said to have exchanged hands between Mutharika’s and Sacrane

Chikapa is said to have reported the matter of the irregularity of the title deed which was cancelled after two original copies were found to have been issued.

Meanwhile, MCP administrative secretary said the party’s politburo will meet Friday and a full list of the NEC will be released by then.

One of Malawi’s most successful businesspeople Jimmy Koreia-Mpatsa last week also refused to assume the post of executive member of MCP, saying he was appointed wihout his consent.

In total, the list shows that MCP NEC has 37 members, including the president, his deputies and secretary general.

In announcing the list, Chakwera said more people may join the committee depending on resolutions of  the new NEC.
