Jailed after offering step-son for sale at K2m

The Blantyre Magistrates Court has convicted and sentenced to 72 months (six years) imprisonment with hard labour (IHL) Lloyd Binzi for attempting to sell his step-son at a value of K2 million, an offence which is contrary to Section 263 of the Penal Code.

Binzi 25 years-old and a resident of populous Ndirande Township was arrested on Friday (February 21st) in his attempt to sell his two years-old step-son (name withheld) to one of the residents.

Senior Residence Magistrate, Innocent Nebi convicted and sentenced Binzi who appeared before court on Tuesday to six years after he pleaded guilty to the offence.

Station Prosecution Officer for Blantyre police, Mojo Phiri told the court Binzi had approached Thomas Chimpini to help him find interested buyer at a commission of K250,000.

“He had put a price tag of K2 million on the child but told Mr. Chimpini he was willing to accept K1.5 million if there was any immediate interested and serious buyer. It was Mr. Chimpini who alerted the Village Headman who later tipped off the police,” Phiri explained.

Cases of  people offering human being for sale are coming common in Malawi and mostly the price tag is MK 2 million .
