JB is not hospitalised, to address rally – Spokesman

State House Press Officer, Tusekele Mwanyongo, has refuted social media gossips that President Joyce Banda collapsed on Friday where she was taken to Kamuzu Central Hospital and has not been well since.

The speculations which went viral claimed President Banda has Blood Pressure following the resignation of Sidik Mia in the ruling People’s Party (PP) and her cabinet.

Mia, who was one of the PP’s three vice presidents to President Banda and Minister of transport and public infrastructure, said on Friday he was stepping down with immediate effect.

He did not give any reasons for resigning, only that his decision was made after “wide consultation, spiritual and personal reflection”.

The social media gossips insinuated that Banda was very poorly after being struck with the news of Mia’s quitting.

But Mwanyongo took to the same Facebook to refute the story, saying there is no iota of truth whatsoever.

“I have been constrained to post this having noted the deliberate misinformation circulating on social media since yesterday suggesting that the Head of State Her Excellency Dr. Joyce Banda is allegedly hospitalized at Kamuzu Central Hospital,” State House Press Officer posted on Facebook.

“There is no grain of truth in these allegations. It is unfortunate that some people in their desperation to find political mileage can go to the extent of wishing the President to be unwell. This is very ‘unMalawian’ and evil to say the least,” he added.

In an interview with Nyasa Times, Mwanyongo said people should not take serious social media gossips because there is no credibility in their reporting.

He said President Banda is well and there is no need to take seriously reports that are indicating that the Head of State has a health scare.

According to Mwanyongo, President Banda was in her office “transacting state business as normal because she is enjoying a robust bill of health.”

He also said the First Gentleman was in good health and spent his day on Saturday in central region tobacco growing district of Kasungu “inspecting his private farm.”

State House press officer added that it’s high time the people of Malawi stopped taking unbalanced and inaccurate stories on social media as gospel truth.

The gossips went further claiming government is making frantic efforts to evacuate President Banda to South Africa for further treatment.

But Mwanyongo said Banda will address a rally at Masintha Ground in the capital Lilongwe on Sunday.

State House said during the rally, President Banda  “who always has the welfare of her people at heart, will also distribute maize and other foodstuffs to hunger-stricken families.”
