JB set to reshuffle Malawi cabinet: Goodall, BJ coming in

Malawi President Mrs. Joyce Banda is expected to announce a cabinet reshuffle in the next 24 hours.

President Banda is expected to appoint Goodall Gondwe as Economic Planning and Development following the resignation of Atupele Muluzi on Monday.

Muluzi resigned following what he suspects is a political conspiracy against him by senior members of the governing People’s Party (PP) of President Banda.

Firebrand politician Brown Mpinganjira, popularly known as ‘BJ’, will be drafted into the cabinet to replace Moses Kunkuyu as Information Minister.

Gondwe: To be made minister

It is not clear where Kunkuyu may be posted to but sources reveal he would remain in cabinet.

’BJ’ lost the contest for First Vice President of the PP at the party’s national convention recently to Transport Minister, Muhammad Sidik Mia, who is also legislator for Chikhwawa Nkombezi Constituency in the Lower district of Chikhwawa.

However, ‘BJ’ is still looked at as an influential politician within PP, particularly in the Lhomwe belt, where he hails from. Mpinganjira is former legislator for Mulanje Central Constituency.

Ken Lipenga is reportedly safe at Finance Minister. He hails from Phalombe district in the Lhomwe belt, strongly believed to be the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) stronghold.

State House officials declined to comment on the impending cabinet reshuffle.

Meanwhile, President Banda will hold a development rally in Thyolo today.
