Jumbe’s Labour Party picks red colour: Launch January, reveals slogan

Former Minister of Finance, Friday Jumbe newly formed Labour Party (LP) has revealed its party colour, slogan and symbol in readiness for a national launch set for January next year.

Jumbe told Nyasa Times in an exclusive interview on Tuesday, the political grouping has chosen red as its colour with a burning torch (muuni) as symbol and its slogan is ‘Party of the People’.

The party has already elected its interim executive committee and formulated manifesto to be revealed during a launch in January which awaits the provision of party certificate from the registrar of political parties in the office of Registrar General.

“Our slogan is in line with our core values to serve everyone. Labour Party focuses on labour rights. We would like to ensure better wages and working conditions for workers. We also focus on redistribution of wealth and land redistribution as well as citizen empowerment,” he told Nyasa Times.

Jumbe: Labour Party

“We submitted the application for certificate four weeks ago and were told everything was ok with our papers. It’s our sincere hope that government bureaucracy will not have a hand in delaying the release of the certificate. Meanwhile all is set for the launch in January but more details we will be revealed once the certificate is out,” explained Jumbe.

Jumbe said the interim committee comprises both old and new faces in the political arena, a blending he said represent both the old and young generations.

On establishment of grassroots structures, the economist said currently Labour Party has managed to set up committees in some districts in southern and central regions and will move to northern region soon.

“In the south we have committees in Thyolo, Mulanje, Chiradzulu, Chikhwawa, Zomba and Blantyre. In central region we are in Lilongwe, Dowa and Kasungu currently working on Ntchisi and Khotakota. We will move to northern region just after Christmas. The response has been overwhelming, a sign that people have welcomed the Labour Party as their party”.
