“I am pleased to inform the country that this year’s golden jubilee celebration will be held in Lilongwe on 6th July, 2014.

“The celebrations will start at around 8: 30 in the morning with interdenominational service of worship at Bingu International Conference Centre, and thereafter at Civo Stadium,” the Vice President highlighted.

He added, “At the Civo stadium, there will be a light of a torch marking the start of another 50 years journey and beyond.”

Additionally, there will be a joint Parade by the Malawi Defence Force (MDF), Malawi Police Service (MPS), Malawi Prison Service (MPS) and the Immigration Department.

According to Chilima, Malawi has also invited guests from Africa and beyond.

“As I speak now, I have no names of people who have confirmed to attend the celebrations, but as a matter of fact we have invited guests from Britain, Nigeria and SADC as well,”

“Former Presidents and Vice Presidents of Malawi have also been invited for the function as they are also part of the achievements that Malawi has made in the 50 years,” Chilima told the journalists.

Meanwhile, Malawi is yet to adopt a theme for the golden jubilee celebrations as it has received a lot of possible themes which are under scrutiny to choose the best.

On this note, Chilima highlighted that the theme will be a reflection of accomplishments that the country has made in the 50 years of independence, and also look forward to the future so that the country achieves more.

There will be a friendly match between the national team of Malawi and the Republic of Mozambique, the Veep said.
