The launch was presided over by Minister of Sports and Culture Grace ‘Obama’ Chiumia, who commended Airtel Money for complementing government’s efforts in developing the game of netball in the country.

“This is the third consecutive year that Airtel Money is sponsoring netball and as government, we appreciate the role that the company is playing in uplifting the standards of netball in the country.

“Let me also appeal to the netball fraternity and all Malawians to show their appreciation by patronising Airtel products such as Airtel Money,” said Chiumia.

The Minister urged other companies to emulate Airtel’s example by sponsoring netball and the country’s national netball team- The Queens.

Airtel Money country director Francis Matseketsa said the company was pleased to be associated with the country’s most treasured sport.

“It is encouraging to see our partnership with Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) grow from strength to strength. Today is another occasion to celebrate our continued support in uplifting communities through sponsorship of the most treasured and successful sport in Malawi.

“The launch of season three of the Airtel Money national netball tournament comes just at the right time as we are celebrating the prestigious achievement of our own brand ambassador Mwawi Kumwenda, who was crowned Athlete of the Year by the International World Games Association (IWGA),” said Matseketsa.

The Airtel Money country director thanked Malawians for passionately following and supporting netball, stating it was because of the netball supporters out there that his company prides itself in sponsoring netball in the quest to make it ‘a bigger and better sport by all standards.’

Nam general secretary Carol Bapu, who represented the association’s president Rose Chinunda was all thanks for Airtel for the sponsorship- which covers both netball clubs and the Queens.

“We are very thankful to Airtel Malawi for the sponsorship whose benefits are there for everybody to see. Apart from improving the standards of netball in Malawi, the Airtel Money sponsorship has brought other good things as our players are now able to keep their allowances and game bonuses safe and secure through the mobile money services offered by Airtel Money,” said Babu.

The launching ceremony was spiced up by traditional dances, poetry, a trophy parade and a netball match involving Salima Select and Mafco Soldiers Netball Team.

Mafco soldiers defeated the select side by 76-14 baskets.
