Kabwila says Atupele joining cabinet ‘threat to democracy’

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) publicity secretary Jessie Kabwila has said United Democratic Front (UDF) leader Atupele Muluzi’s decision to accept a Cabinet post is a “threat to democracy”.

Kabwila said Atupele’s decision “weakens the democratic fibre of the House.”

Said Kabwila: “Democracy is about having a party that is in government and others in the opposition to balance the equation.”

She accused he governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)  of swallowing UDF.

But Balaka North legislator Lucius Banda who is now leader of UDF in the House denied Kabwila’s assertions, saying UDF remains intact as an opposition block.

“You must understand that [Jessie] Kabwila is new in the House; this has happened before, but UDF is alive and kicking,” said Banda.

Meanwhile, UD MPs have remained on the opposition side of the House despite the appointment of their party’s leader into Cabinet.
