Kabwila tells constituents court will save her candidacy

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) spokesperson Jesse Kabwila on Sunday conducted a whistle stop tour in Salima North west where she assured constituents that she is going to stand in the forthcoming May 20 Tripartite Elections , saying justice will prevail in the courts.

Kabwila is the only parliamentary hopeful who has been disqualified by Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).

She is on leave of absence from the University of Malawi, Chancellor College. She took leave specifically so that she can take part in the general elections, but the electoral Commission is of the view she should have resigned.

Accompanied by MCP Campaign Director Felix Jumbe, Kabwila said that her disqualification is just is ill-motivated and unjust.

“If you check with the University of Malawi, I stopped teaching sometime back and they too stopped paying me, so why should they say I am a public servant when actually I am not being paid? This is not a war against me but the whole MCP,” said Kabwira.

Kabwila said as she awaits MEC’s reasons for her disqualification, her lawyers are looking into the issue and they are going to sue by Tuesday.

On his part, Jumbe said the Kabwira issue is one of the challenges the party expects on the road to elections.

“But no matter what, we will come out victorious, because we are fighting for justice. This is a war between darkness and light, thieves and noble people,” he said.

He said if Malawi was really a country with good leaders, many people who are in government could not have stood.

“We are looking at people who spend their time stealing money in government meant for patients in hospitals, schools and other developmental projects yet they want to stand other than bowing out with shame, in fact, they are the ones who were supposed to be barred,” he said.

During the tour, a lot of constituents talked on how they felt once they hear Kabwira’s disqualification news.

Many narrated that they felt down and had no passion to vote since they have trust in Kabwira.

The fiery Kabwira is not new to controversy. She was the president of the Chancellor College academic staff union when the union strongly opposed and fought late Bingu wa Mutharika on academic freedom.
