Kabwila re-elected chair of Malawi parliamentary women caucus
Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Publicity Secretary who is also Member of Parliament for Salima North West, Jessie Kabwila, has been re-elected Chairperson of Parliamentary Women Caucus.
This follows her expirely of her term after holding the position for the past two years.
During the elections, former first lady Shanil Dzimbiri has been elected vice president of the Parliamentary women caucus.
“Am very happy to have returned my seat as Parliamentary women Caucus Chair,” said Kabwila.
Kabwila thanked members of all political parties for overwhelmingly voting her.
Kabwila amassed 23 votes while Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Anna Kachikho got only 2 votes.
“You can see the margin that even DPP members voted for me and even those from People’s Party and United Democratic Front (UDF) supported me,” said Kabwila.
In June, 2016, Kabwila was also elected Chairperson of SADC Parliamentary Forum women Caucus in Swaziland where all the 14 member Parliaments of the SADC Parliamentary Forum were represented at the 39th Plenary Assembly Session of the regional body.
Kabwia has since commended UN Women for the support.
She said her duty will also be to make sure that the 32 women MPs should also return their seat in 2019.
Hearty congratulations to Jessie Kabwila on retaining the leadership of the Parliamentary Women’s Caucus as Chairperson. Congratulations to Shanil Dzimbiri as Vice Chairperson.
Would the Caucus please devise ways of linking up with Women outside Parliament and work collectively to increase the number of women in parliament and local councils in readiness for 2019 Tripartite Elections.
