Kamlepo fires warning shot to Malawi President: Ready to be ‘victim of heartless enemy’

Outspoken Rumphi east MP and Peoples Party (PP) Vice President Kamlepo Kalua says he is ready to be a victim of a heartless enemy – ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) – and A ready to die for the benefit of the people, saying the government’s crackdown on opposition and critics will not silence him to speak about the country problems on economic and social issues.

Kalua – one of the politicians who campaigned against the fall of one party dictatorship and championed democracy in the country – made the remarks at Masintha ground in Lilongwe when the PP led by its acting president Uladi Mussa conducted a mass rally on Sunday.

He claimed to have information that himself, Ken Msonda and some Malawi Congress Party (MCP) officials are on a target list by the ruling DPP)to be silenced with trumped up  treason charges for being vocal in criticizing President Peter Mutharika’s government.

“If we continue with the way they are running this government and expect to threaten us with treason charges once we criticize them then am ready with treason, I am not afraid and I have never been afraid with anybody,” charged Kalua.

“ I was not afraid with Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda who had the military, police and the young pioneers at his disposal and arrested me three times, I was not afraid with Dr Bakili Muluzi during the third term bid who arrested me eight times plus surviving assassination attempts whilst fighting for his (Peter Mutharika) brother (former president late Bingu wa Mutharika) to rule this country and I was also arrested by the DPP government for saying ‘kangwazi‘ so I can’t be afraid with this leadership [ka APM],” said Kalua .

The self-proclaimed revolutionary politician maintained his point at the just ended Public Affairs Committee (PAC) meeting in Blantyre where the opposition delegates gave president Mutharika 30 days to solve the current problems facing Malawians or should resign.

“What we are saying is that if he fails to solve these problems within 30 days, then we should have a National Transition Committee for 90 days just like it when we were going into a multiparty era then there should be elections and this is not tantamount to organizing a coup. If they kill me today then they will follow me very soon,” said Kalua.

He said if Mutharika will not resign after failing to restore the economy in 30 days there will be unprecedented protests.

“I am going to have a lone match to parliament to petition the speaker on this and if they want me to put on a military uniform then I will do that,” said Kalua with a serious tone.

He also took a swipe at the police saying they should not be involved in politics as there role is to maintain peace, law and order.

Speaking earlier,  PP secretary general  Ibrahim Matola challenged government that they are ready to offer transport to ferry maize from where they are keeping it to their constituents.

“They have been claiming that they have enough stocks of maize but we are wondering why there is none in Admarc depots. Let them tell us where they are keeping it and we are ready to offer free transport to our constituencies so that people should have access to it, we can’t just be talking when people out there are dying of hunger,” said Matola.

Earlier before the rally, armed police officers started dispersing people sayingf the party’s communication to the authorities was with conflicting dates.

It was after the discussions with senior police officers that they were allowed to hold the rally.

It was attended by members of Parliament and  senior party officials from all the regions like Ken Msonda, Ulemu Chilapondwa, Halima Daudi, Clara Makungwa, Beston Majoni, Lawrence Mpofu and Samson Msosa among others.
