The workers closed the offices as they demanded for salary arrears for April and May.

They are demanding the heads of director of finance and director of administration respectively.

Council official Davie Gondwe confirmed that offices have been sealed off by the couincil workers.

“Due to some problems including natural calamities we did not collect much, this is why we failed to pay them,” he said.

He said the council would pay the workers the arrears next month, saying officials would be meeting them on Tuesday or Wednesday to explain to them the council position.

Most councils are struggling to pay their direct workers due to government decision to drastically cut on council budgets.
