Karonga man arrested for impregnating his granddaughter
Police in Karonga district, north of Malawi have arrested a 45-year-old-man for defiling and impregnating his 15- year-old granddaughter.
Karonga police spokesperson Enock Livasoni, says Boyd Mumba who has three wives, has been sleeping with her granddaughter since December 2014. Mumba comes from Etiwelo village Traditional Authority Kilupula in the district.
He was also once caught sleeping with the girl in his shop but he was asked to pay two cows by the village aiders as they were assuming that the man will stop his conduct, said Livasoni.
“We arrested the man on Monday after a tip off from the community that Mumba has impregnated his daughter’s child who was staying with her grandmother in the same village but the family members wanted to resolve the issue among themselves,” said Livasoni.
He said girl told the police that Mumba used to rape her in his shop whenever she visited the village.
Livasoni says Mumba is expected to appear before Karonga first grade Magistrate’s court soon to answer charges of defilement.
In a similar development, First Grade Magistrate Chakaka Nyirenda has sentenced a 60-year-old man to six years imprisonment with hard labor for defiling a 12-year-old-girl.
