Karonga mob burns vehicle after hitting cyclist

Angry villagers in Karonga burnt to ashes a Toyota Vitz registration number NU 675 after the driver hit to death a cyclist due to reckless driving.

The car has been identified as property belonging to Anderson Kaweche, Karonga Agricultural Development Division (ADD) deputy programs manager.

Karonga police deputy PRO, George Mlewa, confirmed the development, saying it occurred around 6 pm on Sunday along the Karonga-Chitipa M1 Road.

“A fracas erupted in the aftermath of the accident and the angry villagers burnt the vehicle to ashes,” said Mlewa.

Mlewa also mentioned that they were keeping Kaweche who is expected to appear in court soon for irresponsible driving and murder charges.

An eye witness Gabriel Kamanga said the villagers got furious when they noticed that Kaweche was planning on running away rather than being responsible.

The deceased, Mateyu Mwamulima, 50, hailed from Mwafilaso Village, Traditional Authority Kyungu in the district.

I agree with the idea of testing the cyclist if he was drunk or not. It is possible that he caused the accident other than the vehicle driver.
Police should do something on this. I also demand that those burnt the vehicle should be arrested because they are not judges. How did they know that the driver was wrong. Is it only because the cyclist died and therefore innocent. Mxiii !

Mob justice everywhere mmm hope something is wrong somewhere in our social system, anyway, it saves time and money! Our prisons are already full, no justice for the poor in our courts, so i believe that is the simplest way of dealing with criminals!!!

For example ma fligh overs sagwira ntchito mtauni yet police traffic is there not enforcing the laws on the roads. This is why cyclists think they are the owners of the road and not motor vehicle drivers. Sure boma lingamange tarmak road kuti munthu aziseweramo ndi phazi lake?

Very bad, another mob has set a car into ashes at the company opposite Kaphuka Signpost on the M1 Lunzu Road. Thieves invaded the transport company, while the guards were shouting for help, the nearby villagers blocked the road where the car was parked, when the villagers with the help of neighborhood, attacked the vehicle whch brought the thieves, the driver attempted to run on to find the road blocked, the driver forced his way into the rock blockade thereby damaging the vehicle. When they leave the vehicle with a flat tyre, the intended to run by foot, and one was aprehendended by the nearby villagers, and he was badly wounded, thanks to the police who arrived and rescued him frm the mob, the mob went straight to set the car ablaze.

Anjinga a Ku karonga samapatuka pa nseu. This is a sad development especially to the car owner. Is he the first one to hit a cyclist in karonga? By burning the car, what have they benefited? Is the dead person awake now? And according to what I heard, it’s the cyclist who hit the car, not the driver.

Seriously, with such savage behaviour are you surprised the driver wanted to run away. And I have driven in Karonga, it is one place of a hell to drivers with cattle, kabaza cyclists, pedestrians and minibus/taxi drivers all contesting for awards in disturbing drivers. The police need to bring sanity on Karonga roads.

you crazies must understand that it’s a nightmare to drive in malawi. we have the shittiest roads in sadc with no lights, no lines, no signs, full of potholes, satchet drunkards, farm animals, condemned mchenga lorries and cyclists carrying bags charcoal so huge that they can’t see whats behind them.

so what have you achieved by burning the car? have you brought the dead man back?

  19. hoitty says:

He wanted to run away because of the angry mob. The driver is always wrong in Malawi
