Karonga police fire teargas to stop two fighting men
Police officers in Malawi’s border district of Karonga on Sunday threw teargas carnisters to stop two men who were fighting; eye-witnesses have told Nyasa Times.
The witnesses, who accused the police officers for unprofessionalism in the way they handled the situation, said when the teargas was fired around Karonga boma on Sunday afternoon they thought something big had happened.
“Two men were fighting for reasons not even known till now but instead of just arresting them police officers fired teargas disturbing the peace of almost everybody in the Central Business District (CBD),” an eye-witness, Davie Mwakamogho, said in an interview.
Malawi police officers have over the years been blamed for their unprofessionalism in handling public outroars.
In 2011, during the late Bingu wa Mutharika’s regime, the police allegedly shot 19 men in anti-government protests.
