Karonga residents complain of high water bills: ‘We’ll protest’
Residents in Karonga have taken to task the Northern Region Water Board (NRWB) for high water bills and have since warned of a vigil until the water tariffs have been brought down.
Steven Msokwe of Karonga Justice Network said the residents are alarmed that they pay money ranging from K20,000 up to K30, 000 a month.
“We used to pay K800 a month but things have changed. We are paying more than what we can afford,” said Msokwe.
Msokwe said his organization has since written the Northern Region Water Board to bring down the water tariffs.
He said a meeting last week on the matter yielded little hence the decision to hold a vigil at the water board offices.
“If there is no change, we will protest,” he said.
He said officials from the board said the water tariffs bought by Paladin was very expensive hence the expensive water bills.
Msokwe said consumers have therefore given the board two months to rectify the problem.
Officials from the Northern Region Water Board were not readily available for comment.
