Karonga sponsor dumps team: Yabwanya reacts to FAM ‘persecution’

Karonga United main sponsor Willie Yabwanya Phiri has dealt the team’s return to Malawi flagship football a big blow after resigning as trustee of the team.

Yabwanya Phiri earlier hinted on his intention to dump the team saying his sponsorship hinged on the outcome of the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) verdict on the accusations that he brought the game of football into disrepute by seeking legal action to stop the association elections held in December last year.

Yabwanya Phiri was one of the contenders for the position of FAM president alongside incumbent Walter Nyamilandu Manda and Wilkins Mijiga.

“I write to inform you all that due to personal reasons I with immediate effect temporarily step down as a Trustee of Karonga United,” he stated in a letter addressed to all trustees, executive committee and supporters of the team.

He applauded people of Karonga United offering him an opportunity to serve the team.

“It’s been an honour to serve you and am grateful for all the accomplishments we have achieved together . We brought joy to our community and for now I leave the leadership role to my fellow trustees, Bishop Simama, Chief Kyungu, Mr Kossam Munthali and Mr Speaker Richard Msowoya. I wish them all the best as they take the team forward,” he said.

But the Canada based businessman assured that he would be available to help the team in any in an advisory role shouldneed be.

“I know I love soccer as its dear to my heart and I assure you that I will continue to develop our talent on grassroots level and still put our district and Malawi on the map,” he said.

Karonga, home to some of Malawi great footballers over the years such as Kinnah Phiri, Chiukepo Msowoya, Muzipasi Mwangonde, bounced back into the top league through the back door after Chirumba Barracks withdrew because the Malawi Defence Force has introduced a policy to support at least three teams a season in the top league.

Currently MDF sponsors Red Lions, Kamuzu Barracks, Moyale Barracks and Mafco.

lesson learnt to Karonga united, when sponsors are pulling out of teams it rily hurts in our hearts. How can a trustee of Manchester united be a chairman of Arsenal fc? its happening here @ Karonga. kaporo stars patron Dicon chipanga is also appointed as a chairman of Karonga untd, what’s that? u want to snatch the sponsor of kaporo stars. But God is not a human being He punishes someone in another way round.

This is an opportunity to bring back Dedza young Soccer. After all the drama surely FAM and SULOM will so it very logical to bring back Dedza. They rightfully own the right to be in the Super League
