Karonga to be divided into two districts – Rev Malani

Malawi’s northern and border district of Karonga may be divided into two districts to speed up development for the district’s south and tourists attraction area, Chilumba, if parliament would pass the bill after the elections. .

The decision comes from one of the  Karonga south strong Parliamentary candidates, Reverend  Malani Mtonga, who has been attributing the area’s under development to in adequate funding as most government funding is used for developing Karonga town.

Former President Bakili Muluzi wanted to upgrade Chilumba to sub district following booming economic activities taking place in the area but the plan died naturally.

However, Mtonga who is contesting on Peoples Party’s ticket challenges to advocate for a bill on upgrading the area to sub district if he become MP for the constituency to ensure more donor and government funding for developing the area.

“With booming economic activities happening in Chilumba we qualify to be upgraded to a sub district as this will lead tremendous developments in the area including upgrading Chilumba rural hospital to a full district Hospital and others to first class level”, said Mtonga when he was launching his campaign rally at Uliwa trading centre.

He also pledged to improve road networks and extend electricity to rural areas among other projects, claiming the two are a milestone to development of the sub district.

Chilumba has for so long been regarded as warm heart of Karonga following its fascinating tourists attraction features such as mountains, lake and jetty where the Malawi’s popular, Illala ship, lands.

It is also where the Wovwe Hydro electrical Power which supplies electricity to northern region and part of the central region.

Also speaking during the rally, President for the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) who is also Minister of Youth and Sports development, Enock Chihana pledged to construct a 3000 capacity first class stadium at Uliwa as part of the government contribution towards development of the sub district.

“This will immediately start in 2015 because apart from beautifying the area it will also help to promote foot ball and other sports disciplines in the area”, said Chihana.

He therefore, advised people to vote for Joyce Banda to ensure for the plan to be fulfilled.
