Karonga traders hold demo: Petition DC, boycott paying revenue

A crowd of angry vendors and other traders in Karonga the northern part of Malawi on Tuesday petitioned the District Council that all market users will not pay revenue demanding an explanation on why the district is using Chitipa revenue tickets and also where the 25 percent of the collected revenue which were agreed to be used in managing the market has gone to.

According to the petition signed by the Chairperson of the district main market Godwin Ghambi, since the 15th of March, 2015 the district council has been selling the mixed tickets of Chitipa council and Karonga council without explanation.

“We are much surprised that since the middle of last month the tickets sellers were selling mixed tickets of Chitipa and Karonga, when we asked them they only tell us that it was a direction from the above, so we wonder where the money of Chitipa tickets go and because we have not been answered we conclude that the tickets are fake and what they want is just to eat our money,” said Ghambi when reading the petition at the District Commission’s office.

Adding that “it was also in September last year when we agreed with the council that every 25 percent of the collected revenue will be given to the market to ensure the cleanness of the market premises and also for maintenance of some necessary things within the town but all that is not happening.”

The petition further demanded the council officials to privatize the market.

The Karonga business coalition through the chairperson Wavisanga Silungwe demanded the transfer of some council officials claiming that they are squandering their tax money.

“We also want the government to immediately transfer and audit of some officers who have over stayed in the district because they are the ones involved in the malpractice of mismanaging the council funds,” said Silungwe.

District Administration Officer James Tembo said the council will look into the matter and all issues raised will be addressed.

“On the issue of Chitipa council tickets it was the mistake of the supplier instead of giving us Karonga tickets we were given Chitipa ones,” said Tembo.

The Karonga community, politicians and business operators have been complaining that the district council officials are very corrupted hence demanding some to be transferred.
