Karonga United slaughter Red Lions: Malawi TNM Super League

Zomba based TNM Super League military outfit, Red Lions, returns home with no point from Mzuzu after suffering yet another 2-1 humiliating defeat at the hands of rookies, Karonga United, on Sunday at Mzuzu Stadium.

They become a second giant to be slaughtered by the crocodiles at Mzuzu Stadium after the historical Hygiene Mwandepeka vital goal against Nyasa Big Bullets.

The crocodiles of Karonga were the first to knock at the Lions goal five minutes into the game when Fumbani Msowoya delivered a beautiful corner kick into the box only to be wasted by Green Msowoya alone, unmarked.

The Lions responded in the 10th minute when they brilliantly exchanged passes from one player to another but the last touch and shot by Bonface Kaulesi missed the target with a whisker.

Four minutes later, a free kick by Red Lions was headed back by a defender for Karonga United. The ball landed within the reach of Red Lions captain of the day, Chikoti Chirwa, who unleashed a thunderous shot 35 metres away from goal, beating goalkeeper Lloyd Munthali in the line of duty to allow the Reds lead 1-0.

Green Msowoya’s powerful shot in the 31st minute was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Clement Mlomba for Red Lions.

By half time, each team had taken two shots off target, two shots on target and caught off side twice, the difference being that out the two shots on target for Red Lions, one resulted into a goal.

In the second half, the crocodiles of Karonga came back into the field of play a very charged side, playing a fast passing game.

It happened in the 71st minute when they beautifully knocked the ball around, moving forward with a lot of pace until Benard Msiska got a chance to shoot at goal. His shot was fumbled by the goalkeeper and Nangaunozge Luhanga kicked the ball into the net to make the scoreboard read 1-1.

Both teams then engaged an extra gear in search of the equalizer but the crocodiles were on top of things. Two minutes before the maximum ninety, it was Nangaunozge Luhanga again, whose thunderous shot outside the 18 metre box, ended into the Lions’ net.

2-1 it ended in favour of Karonga United and the brace scorer, Nangaunozge Luhanga, was voted man of the match.

“We played very well especially in the first half. No wonder we got a goal. Karonga United is a good side. They came back hard on us in the second half. Our marking was poor in the last 15 minutes and we got punished. We hope to do well in the second round,” remarked Red Lions coach, Prichard Mwansa, after the game.

Karonga United coach, Kondwani Mwalweni, said to Nyasa Times, “I told my players that it is very possible to get one or more goals in the second half. They worked very hard after pep talk and you have seen the final result.”

Quizzed on the teams future in the TNM Super League, Mwalweni said, “You know we were told at the eleventh hour to join the league replacing Chilumba Barracks. There wasn’t much time to prepare and strategize. In the second round you will see that Karonga United has come to stay in the super league.”
